Are you passionate about environmental and climate justice? Join the New Jersey Environmental Justice Alliance’s inaugural FutureFEST: Climate Reimagined, a free and inclusive space open to all ages and designed to bring together individuals committed to building a healthier, more just future.

Originally created with young people in mind, FutureFEST welcomes high school and college students, adults, and anyone who shares a vision for climate and environmental justice to come together, learn, and collaborate.

Participants will have the opportunity to engage in:

  • Youth-led trainings

  • Organizing skill-shares

  • Climate-focused art, fashion, and culture

  • Hands-on activities on textile justice, biodiversity, and more

Alexia Leclerq

Alexia Leclercq is a grassroots environmental justice organizer and scholar focused on using grassroots campaigns, policy, storytelling, and liberatory education to create a just and sustainable future. 

She has led dozens of campaigns from pushing for an equitable fossil fuel phase out at the UN to passing climate legislation, fighting for clean water, addressing aggregate mining pollution, writing land use laws, relocating toxic tank farms, and organizing mutual aid. 

Alexia is the co-founder of the Colorado River Conservancy and social-environmental justice education non-profit named Start:Empowerment. Her curriculum has reached over 120,000 students across the U.S., and she has been featured on Forbes, Washington Post, and Guardian. Alexia was named a Grist 50 Fixer, awarded the prestigious Brower Youth Award, 2022 WWF Conservation Award, and is the youngest recipient of the Harvard AOCC Award. 

She served as the 2022 UN Assembly Ambassador and has been a guest lecturer at Harvard, University of Texas Law, University of Connecticut, Dell Medical School, Princeton. Alexia graduated Summa Cum Laude from New York University and Harvard Graduate School of Education. 

Climate Revolution Action Network

The Climate Revolution Action Network (CRAN) is a New Jersey-based Gen Z organization committed to advancing climate justice in the state. Their intersectional approach spans focus areas including environmental justice, fair elections, transit access, housing affordability, and climate education and green jobs.

Through advocacy, environmental education, and training and direct action, CRAN has been fighting the climate crisis in New Jersey and anywhere Gen Z needs to be in the room. Learn more about their organizing workshop below!

Hear from a climate justice organizer and the Founder of Start: Empowerment, a youth, BIPOC-led nonprofit that empowers youth of color to innovate, imagine, and build a just and sustainable future.

12:00 –  Lunch Break (Games & Fun)

CRAN’s Policy and Resistance Workshops equip students with the skills needed to fight for change within their communities. Join us as we walk you through the civic engagement process, providing case studies and hands-on exercises to build up confidence in organizing, coalition building, and public speaking.

1:25 – 1:45

Led by student activists, this interactive demo will teach participants about various clothing materials and their associated environmental impacts. We’ll learn about the dangers of fast fashion and commonly used materials, as well as discuss how young folks can find easily-accessible, environmentally friendly materials.

1:50 – 2:20 

Following the textile demo, we’ll host an exciting fashion show designed to highlight sustainable, recycled, and thrifted clothing. We invite participants to bring their own eco-friendly clothing and walk down the runway! If interested in designing your own outfit to present, email futurefest@njeja.org

Join the Fashion Show

We’re looking for eco-conscious designers and models to showcase their talent and creativity on the runway.

How to participate:

  • Design your own outfits using thrifted, upcycled, or repurposed materials (no new purchases!)
  • Be ready to walk the runway to show off your sustainable look

The show will conclude with an audience vote on their favorite design – and there may be some fun prizes in store!

Note: There will be a limited selection of clothing available at the festival for participants who need pieces, but we highly encourage you to bring your own full outfit to walk the runway.
